| International
programme
By the mid 1980s the Foundation had forged links with the
World Health Organization, and the priority at this stage
was to demonstrate the viability and feasibility of using
fluoridated milk as a dental public health measure. Through
this collaboration the first community based milk fluoridation
scheme was implemented in Bulgaria
in 1988,and this provided valuable experience and encouraged
others to pursue similar initiatives in a number of countries.
During the early 1990s the international milk fluoridation
programme began to take shape; projects were implemented in
the Russian
Federation, China,
Chile
and the United
Kingdom and several years later in 1999 milk fluoridation
was introduced in Peru,
although it ceased in 2004 because of the increased
use of fluoridated salt. In Thailand
however, a programme introduced in 2000, has rapidly expanded
and, more recently in the Republic
of Macedonia milk fluoridation was introduced in 2009.
Within each country the aim has been to establish a demonstration
or pilot scheme to provide a model for the implementation
of further projects in other parts of that country or region.
This has been achieved in a number of schemes and there are
plans under consideration for further development in each
of the countries involved. The Foundation is also keen to
achieve expansion through the implementation of new schemes
in other countries, and would welcome
enquiries from potential collaborators. Further details
of scheme
development can be found on this site.
