Research - overview

The Foundation is providing support for the evaluation of community based schemes and other research designed to strengthen the scientific base for milk fluoridation. Research into fluoridated milk was undertaken as early as 1953, and since then, the efficacy of fluoridated milk has been demonstrated in a number of studies.

The evaluation of community based schemes has also provided positive results and a number of further studies are currently being conducted in those countries involved in the international programme.

Information on recent publications can be found on this site. As the number of scientific publications continue to grow, The Foundation has endeavored to collate all the papers, and has transferred this information (in abstract form) onto a database, which currently extends to over 290 entries. Copies of this can be requested from the Foundation on CD Rom, or as an electronic file (zipped), or in a printed form.

The Foundation remains the principal sponsor for studies into milk fluoridation globally, and also provides funding for research that complements our core activities. Details of some of the studies being supported by the Foundation, can be found in research studies.

The 2009 E W Borrow Memorial Award was won by Professor Lars Petersson of the Maxillofacial Unit, Central Hospital, Halmstad, Sweden. The announcement was made at the 87th IADR General Session in Miami, Florida, USA. Originality of contribution and record of achievement in the field of oral health prevention, plus the significance of research carried out on the oral health of children, form the basis of selection for this annual award.
