This event was held prior to the IADR General Session on Tuesday 21st March 2017.
Guidance on fluoride intake provided by various agencies / authorities around the world is a key consideration. However this guidance was first proposed several decades ago. In light of current evidence the Borrow Foundation is supporting a three-hour IADR satellite symposium to consider whether, the guidance remains valid and whether or not there are uncertainties around such guidance.
Three experts (from Australia, Brazil and Sweden) prepared reviews on the appropriateness of current guidance: Professors John Spencer, Adelaide, Marilia Buzalaf, São Paulo and Ingegerd Mejàre, Stockholm. The issues raised by the three reviewers were far-ranging, reflecting their areas of expertise and interest. These reviews were discussed by two experts, from the USA and UK; Professor Angus Walls, UK and Dr Angeles Martinez Mier, USA. The final 40 minutes of the symposium provided time for questions and comments from all participants, with responses by the panel of the above five speakers. To focus discussion, the Chair, Professor Andrew Rugg-Gunn, posed a series of questions relevant to the issue. It is proposed that the proceedings of the symposium will be published shortly.
