Digital Oral Health Initiatives in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Scoping Review

A collaboration between universities in Montpellier, France and Alexandria in Egypt aims to map digital oral health interventions in low- and middle-income countries, highlighting challenges and opportunities in their implementation.

Oral health disparities in low- and middle-income countries are a major public health issue, with limited access to care and a high disease burden. Digital technologies offer a solution, enabling remote diagnosis, treatment, and expanded access to dental care for underserved communities.

With this grant from The Borrow Foundation, a scoping review and subsequent expert workshop, planned by the end of 2025- early 2026, will pave the way for implementing digital oral health projects in low- and middle-income countries.

This research focuses on evaluating local actions and understanding policymakers’ needs to enhance global oral health through digital technologies. The Borrow Foundation has previously provided support to two important initiatives: a 2020 study with McGill University on global digital oral health readiness and in 2022 meeting in Montpellier to discuss digital technology for universal health coverage with European CDO and experts from the field.
